Freshman Pre-Engineering Planning Sheet
FRESHMAN PRE-ENGINEERING PLANNING SHEET
FALL 2008
The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers a pre-engineering program and advises
students who are interested in engineering. The first two years of an engineering
degree program are very similar to the first two years of the physics major program.
Since a majority of our pre-engineering students transfer to North Carolina State
University to complete their engineering studies, we have worked out our advising
program in consultation with the Coordinator of Transfers and Special
Programs at the NCSU College of Engineering.
The pre-engineering program has been approved by the UNC Subcommittee on Engineering
Transfer for transfer to the engineering programs at North Carolina A & T State
University, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina at
Charlotte.
We recommend the following first year schedule for pre-engineering students.
FALL SEM HRS SPRING SEM HRS
MAT 1110 4 MAT 1120 4
PHY 1150 5 PHY 1151 5
ENG 1000* 3 ENG 1100 3
IND 1001 4 CS 1440 4
Activity/ Wellness 1 Activity/ Wellness 1
17 s.h. 17 s.h.
*You may not take ENG 1000 unless you pass the English writing test.
NOTE: After finishing ENG 1000 and 1100, you may select either a history or
literature sequence. If you do, then you must take one introductory and
one advanced course. See NCSU Pre-Engineering Course List
If, on the basis of the math placement test, you do not place into MAT 1110, you should
take MAT 1025 in the fall and MAT 1110 in the spring. Also, instead of taking PHY 1150
in the fall, you should take CHE 1101/1110. Take CHE 1102/1120 in the spring only if you are
applying for Aerospace, Biological, Chemical, Environmental, Material Science, or
Nuclear Engineering or will be transferring to Clemson University. Otherwise take one
of the humanities requirements. See NCSU Pre-Engineering Course List.
It is most important that you begin your math and science course work during your
first semester at Appalachian.
YOU SHOULD CONFER WITH A PHYSICS/PRE-ENGINEERING ADVISOR BEFORE REGISTERING EACH
SEMESTER. Please come to the Physics and Astronomy office (231 CAP) to make an
appointment for pre-registration advising or when questions or problems arise regarding
your program of study.
DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMS WITH AUBURN UNIVERSITY AND CLEMSON UNIVERSITY
Appalachian has formal agreements with Auburn University and Clemson University
whereby a student may complete three years of study at Appalachian, approximately
another two at the Auburn or Clemson College of Engineering and then receive
college degrees from both institutions. Consultation with Dr. Tom Rokoske,
Department of Physics and Astronomy, and the Chairman of the Physics and Astronomy
Department can provide you with details of these programs.
